Acute renal failure in Plasmodium malariae infection.

چکیده
We report an unusual case of transfusion-transmitted malaria which remained undiagnosed for several months in an Italian woman splenectomised and polytransfused for thalassaemia major. The infecting species was Plasmodium malariae, and the patient developed acute renal failure, severe thrombocytopenia, and hepatic failure. Treatment with chlorochine was followed by a slow, but complete recovery of renal function.

Clinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Chloroquine in Children and Their Mothers
Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are the parasites that infect humans. Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax cause most of the malarial infections worldwide. Plasmodium vivax, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae, and Plasmodium knowlesi are susceptible to chloroquine. Chloroquine was the world's most widely used antim...
متن کاملComplication of corticosteroid treatment by acute Plasmodium malariae infection confirmed by small-subunit rRNA sequencing.
We report a case of acute Plasmodium malariae infection complicating corticosteroid treatment for membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis in a patient from an area where P. malariae infection is not endemic. A peripheral blood smear showed typical band-form trophozoites compatible with P. malariae or Plasmodium knowlesi. SSU rRNA sequencing confirmed the identity to be P. malariae.

ognized as responsible for renal disease in tropical areas. Renal manifestations are mainly associated with two parasites: (i) Plasmodium malariae, which usually gives rise to an immune-complex mediated mesangiocapillary glomerulonephritis (GN) several weeks after the onset of symptoms; and (ii) Plasmodium falciparum, which can cause different types of renal alterations, ranging from asymptomat...
متن کاملGenomic Characterization of Recrudescent Plasmodium malariae after Treatment with Artemether/Lumefantrine
Plasmodium malariae is the only human malaria parasite species with a 72-hour intraerythrocytic cycle and the ability to persist in the host for life. We present a case of a P. malariae infection with clinical recrudescence after directly observed administration of artemether/lumefantrine. By using whole-genome sequencing, we show that the initial infection was polyclonal and the recrudescent i...
متن کاملSpontaneous rupture of malarial spleen presenting as hemoperitoneum: a case report.
Malaria has been among the most common infectious diseases in India. The causative microorganism belongs to the Plasmodium family. The four common species that are encountered are Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae and P. ovale. Plasmodium falciparum infection carries more risk of complications such as cerebral malaria, acute renal failure, liver damage, collapse etc. Plasmodium vivax...
